It is gradually being taken over by the devil himself who has already possessed some of the residents, making them take part in bizarre rituals where some unlucky innocent gets sacrificed. The tiny village of Tynham Cross sounds like my kind of place. Besides, some of my best friends (and relatives) are well-known from returning from the dead - my Great Uncle Boris has stages more 'comebacks' than Joe Bugner although he hasn't been knocked out as many times! For other people, vampires and demons are the things most feared - I'm not worried about them though when you live with a 'thing' as ugly and stupid as The Geek, ghosts and ghouls seem positively loveable. The Geek beats me at chess and rearranges my bodily parts, the world is taken by hordes of Robin 'Boyo Wonder' Hogg clones who force everyone to play flight sims all day, and I miss an episode of Cell Block H: that just about sums up my personal nightmare. left and right reversed and does not relate logically to the north side, nor to compass directions, when playing the game. Note: if you are an early purchaser of this game, the accompanying map in the first 4000 copies, has the south side of the street shown 'handed'- i.e.Or so I am told, for this is a big game, with some very complex problems, and I haven't cracked them all yet! It contains some fairly blood- curdling scenes, especially at the end. Horror Soft has developed a major new adventure system for 16-bit machines it's a bit like Sierra's, a bit like Mindscape's, but it has an identity all of its own.įinally, be warned! This gory game is NOT for children. Granted, 'though', that it'll be the graphics output on which the player's attention will mainly be focussed. The text messages, too, tend to be flat and uninspired, despite there being a reputed 90k text in the game before compression. But whilst the animation of the characters in the story is very lifelike, intellectually they are wooden. The animated storyline is consistent from location to location. SAVE and RESTORE are two very necessary options, and because you're likely to die a horrible death at any time, SAVE should be used regularly! But when you do save a position, make sure you note it down, for there is no way of listing these within the game. They can be taken by dragging into the INV icon. INV replaces the graphics screen with an 'icon list' of objects carried, ROOM similarly displays all takeable objects in a given location. Movement is by mouse, or, again, by keyboard text. But whole sentences such as PUT BRIEFCASE IN WARDROBE will be accepted by the parser. AN object can then be selected by clicking on the appropriate part of the picture, and the whole command is then entered by clicking the right hand mouse button. Instead of actually typing commands, a verb can be selected with the left hand mouse button, and it will appear in the input area below the text window. To the left of the screen are direction icons, and to the right, verb icons. The game can be played from the keyboard or mouse. Your object is to shop the guilty ones to the local bobby, and rescue people before they are ritually sacrificed. It turns out that the Devil has taken over the lives of some of the villagers, and horrific crimes are taking place there. Just before you are about to leave, you receive a disturbing letter which states that you have to stay at the Dog and Duck and that your mother is away visiting her sick sister. In Personal Nightmare, your father is an oddball vicar, and a letter from your mother prompts you to visit them. Personal Nightmare was generally well-received, including the ratings of 87% by Zzap! (Amiga), 84% by Computer + Video Games (Amiga and Atari ST), 74% by CU Amiga (Amiga) and 7/10 by Datormagazin (Amiga). Here is the first in a series of horror adventures from Horror Soft. The player loses the game if four days pass and all the required possessed citizens have not been killed and the devil has not been repelled. Newer versions of the game omitted the encounters where the players gets garroted. There are many encounters that can kill the player (ideally at night time) unless the player performs a proper action to avoid them. The player's inventory can be viewed in the respective menu. Much of the game's movement and actions are real-time based so there is a day and night cycle. A compass indicates which directions the player can travel. The game makes use of a combination of text-based commands, clickable verbal commands and clickable objects to progress. The game focuses on a town where The Devil has invaded and the player has four days to eliminate all possessed citizens (led by a witch and a vampire) and finally purge the evil by defeating the Devil himself before he can take over.
